George Orwell’s, ‘1984’, is a novel of fiction, Published in 1949. Throughout the book; (Big Brother) emerges as an exercise in ‘double think’.   1984   brings to our attention the alleged , socio -psychological game between the ‘ subjects of  the super state Oceania  ‘ feelings’ and what they are  coerced and eventually enforced, by ‘Big Brother,’  in channel:  Room 101 through dread and fear to feel.
The Plot:

Winston, an ordinary bloke, works for the: ‘Ministry Of Truth and regularly tunes into the only broadcasting channel on offer.  He does this because Winston has ‘feelings’ y’ see, feeling for a woman named Julia. He is in two minds about his socio erotic urges, are they love or just erotic release?  He has followed all of ‘Big Brothers’ advice so far yet he needs to make sense of his feelings, his urges!

He writes in his diary on: April the 4th, 1984:

‘To the past or to the future. To an age when thought is free. From the Age of Big Brother, From the Age of the Thought Police, from a dead man... Greetings’

Julia also displays socio- erotic tendencies yet Orwell, depicts Julia as living her life in a silent sexual revolt and accuses her of  using the system and men  for her own ‘ personal' gratification

Neither urges are encouraged in 1984

Winston is in lust, love and disgusted by Julia.  He thinks Julia is a cunning ploy by the ‘thought police’ to distract him from his life path of love for the state through lust for her.

Lust and love overcomes Winston and both he and Julia are caught in the ‘Act’ and both dragged into room 101.  Room 101 is a torture room. A room where all fears are faced and sadistically preyed on in attempt to cleanse human emotion

Stage right: Room 101.  Enter O Brian:

O’Brien’s belief in the news networks power is strong. He    believes in the ideology to the point he allows himself to become: the ‘cleanser’ of ‘feelings’. In room 101 he tortures Winston through his most terrifying fear: being gnawed by rats.

"You are afraid," said O'Brien, smiling through Winston’s Torture:  "that in another moment something is going to break...?"

"What have you done with Julia?" replies Winston.

O'Brien: "She betrayed you, Winston. Immediately-unreservedly.  I have seldom seen anyone come over to us so promptly. You would hardly recognize her if you saw her. All her rebelliousness, her deceit, her folly, her dirty-mindedness – everything has been burned out of her. It was a perfect conversion, a textbook case.
"You tortured her?" Upon hearing of Julia’s betrayal, Winston is certain that she was subject to torture, just as he was.
Loyalty is easy to breach in the face of torture.
